Discover Nature Journaling

Looking with attention

Nature Journaling is about capturing what you see, hear, smell or feel in nature. You take a sketchbook outside—whether to a park, on holiday, or simply in your garden or on your balcony—and observe your surroundings with mindful attention. It might be a glistening raindrop on a leaf, a bumblebee indulging in pollen, or a blue tit feeding its young with juicy green caterpillars.

Opening your senses

Slowing down and opening all your senses allows you to truly be present in the moment. You zoom in and forget everything else for a while. Meanwhile, you jot down sketches and notes of what you see—simple, small, and spontaneous. That’s the magic of Nature Journaling: it’s beautifully simple, yet it brings a sense of wonder for even the tiniest things. Later, you may choose to refine your sketches at home—but there’s no pressure.

Connecting with nature

You start to notice things you’d otherwise overlook and connect more deeply with nature through journaling. It’s wonderfully relaxing. And the beauty is: anyone can Nature Journal. The goal isn’t to draw perfectly, but to truly observe. You don’t need to be an artist or biologist to experience the benefits—just take a little time, slow down, and stay open.

And the beauty is: anyone can Nature Journal!

Wild Wonder

One well-known approach to Nature Journaling – also the method I follow – is from the Wild Wonder Foundation, founded by American naturalist John Muir Laws. This method centers around three core themes: attention, curiosity, and creativity. Through the questions I notice, I wonder, and It reminds me of, you challenge yourself to ask more, zoom in further, and unlock deeper layers of observation. These moments naturally lead to wonder and stillness, creating a deep connection with nature – and with yourself. Why not give it a try?
